Fellow Karate-ka:

Mind, body, and spirit.  Three distinct yet unified creations which make up the whole of our human being.  There is a much deeper meaning to each of the before mentioned creations then first meets the eye.

One does not exist without the other just as our God exists as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Three distinct persons in one God yet unified to make up the whole of our God.  We are created in His image and likeness.  You have a mind, a body, and a spirit.  It’s interesting when you study this closely to notice the oneness we have within ourselves with these three creations but yet find it hard to understand the significance of our oneness with our Creator and His unique triune nature.

We have a responsibility to take care of and develop the creation that is ourselves.  In karate training you will come to learn that you cannot possibly be a good karate-ka without developing each of the human characters of mind, body, and spirit.  One does not exist without the other in karate or for that matter in life.  Karate is a vehicle to help you develop each.

Your mind must be sharp, aware, understanding, knowledgeable, discerning, and quiet to be able to perform its unique job.  Your body must be in good shape, strong, relaxed, reflexive, and soft to perform its unique job.  Your spirit must be willing, charged, peaceful, aggressive, loving, comforting, and soaring to perform its unique job.  Without any one of the three, we cannot function properly as human beings.  Additionally, all three must be in tune to the living God in us and all around us.

Do not let go of the likeness in which you are created.

This is the way.

Sensei Dave
