Monthly Message: May 2003

Fellow Karate-ka:

This has been a very busy month for me personally. Trying to balance the instruction that I give to you my students and increasing my personal training for an upcoming test has been hard to say the least. I have been able to do it though.

You may ask how with all of the things that I have going on. The answer is simply prioritizing my activities. For instance this monthly message is coming to you halfway through the month instead of the beginning. Since we constantly see each other and there is a large amount of material on our web site, I have been able to put this off a little longer so that I can concentrate on other martial things that are needed for our site.

Another shift for me was to add some of my practice techniques to your training. This benefits you and me. Basics are the most important, and we've been doing lots of them in the last month!

Delegation of duties to others like my assistant instructors has allowed me to practice more while you are being warmed up for training by them. Also performing all of my kata in front of you allows me to train. You'll notice that I've been doing a lot of this lately.

Every spare minute of every day that I have is spent doing some kind of karate technique. Knowing material fluently in ones' mind is just as important as executing it. Having 10 minutes of time means performing a kata several times. I do not waste my time.

So as my test approaches I have devised ways to take other things “off my plate” by the ways described above but I have also devised ways to utilize my time more efficiently. I wonder how many of you think of things like this to help you train better?

This is the way.
