Reigi
Fellow Karate-ka:
Reigi. This Japanese word is tied very
closely to many parts of the martial arts. Respect, for self and
others, and the Dojo Kun, the rules of behavior in the dojo.
They are put in place not to limit your experience in training, but to
help make the training time run smoother, so that more can be done in
the time we have each class.
There are sections on Reigi and the Dojo Kun
posted on this website. Many have printed them off, and put them
in your books. That is a very good start, but it is not enough.
Read them, over and over again. Study these rules, discipline
yourself to learning them as fully as possible... until the proper
behavior as given in those rules is as much a part of your karate as
your stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks.
Reigi are most commonly derived from the
tenets of Bushido, the Warrior Code of the Samurai. As the martial
artists of today, we have an obligation to uphold these tenets as best
we can. The tenets of Bushido are:
These seven aspects of
the life of a warrior are the foundation for all traditional martial
arts. You would all do very well to learn them, and take them to
heart.
Learning Reigi is an
on-going battle. It never changes in the sense that you no longer
have to do something. It grows. The further you go along the
Martial Way, the more you will need to know about how to interact with
other Budo-ka, martial artists, with proper Reigi.
This is the way.
