Nahashu Ryu Quarterly Message
From Hombu: September 2008
Dave Nielsen, Hanshi, 10th
Dan
Founder (Soke) Nahashu Ryu Karate-Do
Fellow Karate-ka:
Every four months you will receive a message
from myself and posted under the “Sensei’s Words” section of the Nahashu
Dojo site. You will continue to receive monthly messages from Tesshi
Sensei and maybe even Amy and Roberto Sensei. My message will tell you
about upcoming events in the Nahashu Dojo as well as where we are headed
in the USATKA. Also, you might find some training tips that may prove
valuable to you.
The biggest news this month (especially for
myself), is the publication of my new book “Creating Kata”. It will be
available soon for purchase to the entire world. The price should be
ranged any where from $15 - $20. I will be doing a book signing sometime
in November either at Barnes and Nobles at Wolfe Chase, or at Borders on
Poplar. Maybe even at both! I will give a discount to any Nahashu Ryu
student of 10% and will be available at Hombu Dojo to sign it for you if
you so desire.
The title itself, “Creating Kata” should
give you a good idea what the book is about. It is a rather quick read,
but be very careful, for the explained process in the book could take
months, maybe years to complete. It definitely will take time to sink in
and understand the importance of what I’m both saying and giving away. I
wrote this book on the shoulders of past and present karat giants. It
was a subject that needed to finally be tackled and is the first of its
kind. I hope all of you will give it a read and support my efforts.
The next news is to be watching the USATKA
main site for upcoming changes. Amy Sensei is now the director/president
of the USATKA and is working with Teshi and myself to make it more
streamlined, understandable, and attractive to all who visit us.
Hopefully a visitor “counter” will be added soon. Already we are working
on a designated international area for karate and kobudo to go along
with the USA section of the site. Newest to the sight, and already up
and running is the link to sign up for the free monthly USATKA
NEWSLETTER. I highly encourage all Nahashu Ryu students to subscribe to
this free newsletter. Each month you will receive one in your email and
it will be filled with training tips, articles from me and other martial
artists as well as dates of upcoming seminars and well, just everything
karate. So sign up soon and get some friends to sign up also.
I have been told that Michael Neal has
recruited his first student in Nahashu Ryu in Cookeville, TN. This is
very important because he will be setting up the first Nahashu Ryu Dojo
besides the Hombu here in Bartlett. So I’d like to congratulate Michael
and JoAnna on their first student out in Eastern Tennessee and wish the
best of luck in attracting more students. The first one is always the
hardest. By the way Mike, what are you going to name your Dojo?
Hopefully soon, Tesshi will be opening a
Dojo and recruiting new students in the Byhalia, MS area. Look for this
to happen in the upcoming months. I’m looking forward for this to take
shape thus giving us a total of three Dojo. Look for Tesshi to name his
Nahashu Ryu Roninkan Dojo or something very similar.
When these Dojo open and as they start to
get a number of students, I will begin my traveling to them periodically
so they know that we have a Soke and that they are all registered and
backed by Hombu. I will participate in their testing and hold seminars
at the different Dojo at different times during the year where all
Nahashu students can participate.
At this point I’d like to mention our newest
member of the Hombu Dojo in Bartlett. His name is Zach Taylor and he is
7 years old. He has been with us two weeks now and is already tearing up
the requirements for 10th kyu. I am glad to have you as part
of the class Zach and keep up all of your hard work!

I am glad to see everyone working so hard
and continuing their training in the traditional manner.
Congratulations!
Remember, the newsletters are to be used at
your leisure. Sensei’s words/monthly messages are to be read,
downloaded, and printed and put into your black belt books. The guest
books on each site should be signed by each student once a month
Prepare yourself for each karate class by
thinking about it before you enter the Dojo. Once you get inside the
Dojo, leave the rest of the world outside and begin to clear your mind
of everything and then slowly focus it only on your karate training. Get
together with other students or go into a corner by yourself and work on
some of your karate techniques, exercises, or Kata. This will help focus
your mind for training and help get you excited about class until you
hear the inevitable command of “Shugo”. Then you will line up and be
ready for karate training.
Don’t forget about my new book “Creating
Kata”. Please take an opportunity to purchase and read it. Always
encourage one another and build each other up in training and in Christ.
Keep up the training and I’ll speak to you all once again in December.
Until then,
Peace.
