Monthly Message: November 2007
Fellow Karate-ka:
Welcome to the Holiday Season! During
this time of celebration of thanks, remembrance, praise, and worship, we
must all keep in mind that our busy lives of shopping for our loved ones
bring a very large increase in the number of crimes committed. In fact,
more crimes are committed in the months of November and December than
any other months of the year. The next closest would be the summer
vacation months.
Please make sure that you use some simple
self defense techniques to keep you and your loved ones safe. I write
this every year in these messages so that you will be reminded of the
increased danger of robbery (armed), break-ins, and bodily harm during
these last few months of the year.
- Always go out with at least one other person.
- Stay/shop in neighborhoods that you know.
- Park in a well lit area.
- If you have an automatic key lock chain with a horn alarm on it,
use it while coming back to your car about 30 yards away.
- Be aware at all times of your surroundings.
- Shop if at all possible during the day light hours. If not then
shop very early in the morning.
- Shop early and not the day before the Holiday.
- Carry a cell phone.
- If confronted with an armed robber, live to fight another day
and give them whatever they want but not your life.
- Keep all gifts or store bought items in your trunk and out of
sight.
These are probably the top ten things
that you can use as self defense for the Holiday season. See if you can
come up with some more of your own with your family. The important thing
is that you are AWARE of all of the things that can go wrong.
Most of the list can be used at other times of the year as well. Discuss
this with your family and make sure that you are always protected in
your home, car, traveling, and shopping; even when you are just out with
friends.
It’s amazing, but true traditional karate
starts with the mind in thinking about one’s safety even before we get
to the body and spirit of our training.
This
is the way.
