Fellow Karate-ka:

Holiday season. Increased robberies. What do you do to protect yourself? Practice the following.

Remember these three safety rules: Scan, Avoid, and carry a cell phone.

We all need to be reminded about safety even though it sits at the back of our minds because we've heard it before. Now lets refresh our thoughts by bringing it to the front of our minds.

Always scan surrounding areas such as parking lots, garages, and streets that you will be walking on or parking your car at. Have friends with you and park in well lit areas or shop in the day light hours if you can. If you can't then shop in the early evening hours. Do not get lost in conversations with your friends or family when walking to and from your cars but rather be aware of your surroundings and save those conversations for when you enter the building that you are going to or the car you're driving in. Criminals will attack a group of people who are unaware. Keep items locked in the trunk of your car out of sight and not on the seat of your vehicle. Scan the area around your car about thirty yards from it when returning to it and notice what's in other cars and who's around yours. Always have your keys out and ready to open your car. If you have a remote key ring then you might sound your horn before you get to your car to make would be criminals nervous.

If you see someone that you think is suspicious then avoid them even if it means turning around and going back into the store you just came from or taking a different route to your vehicle. Find a security guard to escort you to your vehicle. So what if you're a little late getting home or wherever it is that you're going. Pay attention to that “something doesn't feel right” feeling that you have. It's usually correct.

Finally, use your cell phone if you see something happening or you think you're in trouble. It's much better to be safe then sorry. Cell phones are a must nowadays and can even help save someone else life.

If all this fails and you find yourself at gun or knife point, cooperate fully and give the attacker anything that they want. Your life and family are more important then ending up in the hospital or even worse, losing your life over gifts or money. Use your martial arts mind and be proactive about your safety to cut your chances of being attacked this holiday season or at any time during the year.

This is the way.
